Interdisciplinary artist and educator Helina Metaferia is making her debut solo exhibition in Boston at Northeastern University’s Gallery 360. Against a Sharp White Background pays homage to a quote from novelist and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston: “I feel most colored when I am thrown against a sharp white background.”

Riley Robinson is studying Journalism at Northeastern University, with minors in International Affairs and Political Science. She recently completed a four-month co-op at The Christian Science Monitor, a non-profit news organization; there, she had the opportunity to work alongside several Northeastern alumni from both graduate and undergraduate programs.

Dani Snyder-Young is an artist, author, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Theatre at Northeastern University. A director by trade, she uses teaching as an organic extension of the collaborative drive that is theatre-making. By leading collaborative teams through problem-solving, she helps Theatre students become artistic collaborators in the classroom—and in production.

As part of her graduate degree program in Experience Design, Northeastern University student Mary Amulya Joseph is expanding her industry knowledge as an Inclusive Design Researcher at the Institute for Human-Centered Design (IHCD), a Boston-based organization dedicated to enhancing the experiences of people of all ages, abilities, and cultures through excellence in design.

CAMD student Anna Hegyaljai, who is a Games major, is on track to earn her BFA in next spring. Anna chose to pursue an academic and professional career in Game Design because of her interests in environment art, world design, and game-level building. She recently wrapped up her co-op at Manticore Games in San Mateo, California, where she was able to expand her knowledge of the gaming world.

Northeastern student Laurel Parker is currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Graphic Design with a concentration in Information Design to bring her lifelong passion for creativity into her education and work. This past fall, Laurel completed a co-op as a Graphic Designer at Rue Gilt Groupe, the company for the well-known brands Rue La La and Gilt, which provides online shoppers with lower-priced fashion from today’s top designers.

How did you prepare for your role at CNBC? I started keeping up with what they were reporting on by reading articles and watching clips from their broadcast—so I could get a sense of what they cover and so I could generate some ideas about what I wanted to cover. Since it was my first co-op I didn’t exactly know how else to prepare or what to expect. What does a typical day at CNBC look like for you? I work in two different departments for CNBC. Northeastern alumna Claudia Vilcu graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Media Arts with a concentration in Animation that prepared her for her role at The SPA Studios (Sergio Pablos Animation), where she worked right after graduation. During her time at SPA, which is located in Madrid, Spain, Claudia had the opportunity to grow her skill set while gaining valuable experience including the development and design of FX, 3D elements, and final compositing of shots in a Netflix film.

Before getting a Master of Science (MS) in Media Advocacy at Northeastern, Alanna Fusco completed an internship in the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice. During her time in the master’s program, which is a collaboration between CAMD’s School of Journalism and the School of Law, she had the opportunity to make valuable connections and learn from industry leaders and experienced faculty.

New York-based writer and designer Avery Robertson, Northeastern alumnus, has an impressive background in Architecture that includes studying abroad in France, Germany, and the Netherlands – and most recently, living and working in New York City.

At Teach for America’s , the educational non-profit brings together community members to help create more LGBTQ+ inclusive classrooms. TFA teaching corps members, alumni, staff, partners, and students gather for a weekend of workshops and presentations on teacher preparation, student support, school culture, policy, and more. During this year’s event, Northeastern alumnae Jenie Michael and Olivia Giorlandino were brought in to present on the topic of gender bias in the classroom.

On November 20, 2019, Northeastern University hosted the debut U.S. presentation of a first-of-its-kind interactive digital installation of the famous Codex Atlanticus—the most extensive existing collection of preserved drawings and text by Renaissance artist, Leonardo da Vinci. The masterpiece follows his works around the subjects of math, science, art, engineering, and the humanities from 1478 to 1519.

Northeastern students Fan Ling and Yichen He, who are both in CAMD’s MS in Game Science and Design program, created a “Learn to Code” game proposal that earned them an 8-week fellowship through Games for Change (G4C), a nonprofit that facilitates the creation and distribution of digital games that serve as powerful tools in humanitarian and educational efforts.

Northeastern Visiting Professor, interdisciplinary designer and artist, and neuroscientist Ray LC used a civic center and shopping mall in Dundee, Scotland to innovatively embody protests and collective social action around the world.

Philosopher Robin James published her third book, The Sonic Episteme: Acoustic Resonance, Neoliberalism, and Biopolitics, to examine how twenty-first-century conceptions of sound as acoustic resonance shape notions of the social world, personhood, and materiality in ways that support white supremacist capitalist patriarchy.

Dr. Sara Jensen Carr, Assistant Professor of Architecture, Urbanism, and Landscape, and Program Director at the Master of Design for Substantial Urban Environments, has been honored as the first recipient of the biennial Oregon | Places Prize from the University of Oregon in partnership with Places Journal. Her groundbreaking proposal, Water is Wealth: Occupation and Erasure in Honolulu’s Urban Landscape and its Ecological Future, disrupts the exotic perception of Honolulu.
